Wrapping it all up

September 2, 2008 17:45 by Chris Smith

So how did you do with goal setting and the exercises in each of the 7 modules?  You should now have a plan for the following:-

  • Health & Well-Being
  • Physical Environment
  • Wealth
  • Career
  • Fun & Recreation
  • Relationships
  • Contribution

If you have not managed to work through all of them, take some time out right now to complete the actions for each section.  It will pay dividends to do these exercises.  Research conducted with leavers from the top 3 American Universities; Yale, Harvard and Princeton in the 1950's studied a group students and fund that only 3% of them had written down any meaningful goals.  They re-established contact with them 10 years later and found that the cumulative wealth of the 3% who had written goals exceeded that of the 97% who had now written goals.  Now if that is not a compelling reason to write down your goals, I don't know what is!

So now you have invested time and effort in getting clear about what you want in each of the above areas, and, you have taken some actions already, you will need to keep taking action on these areas each and every week.  Think of this rather like a garden.  You will need to sow and plant regularly to ensure that your garden blooms.  You will also need to feed the soil, weed and cut back overgrown areas.  When you do maintenance regularly you will never need to take drastic action in any particular area.

I strongly recommend that you take your diary at least once a week and diligently plan in activity around each of the seven areas.  Make sure that you protect your time in each of the areas so that nothing else interferes with progress.  Also remember that it easy to get distracted by other things.  If you spend all of your time working and not looking after you health or relationships, sooner or later, something will hurt.  The wheel of life below is something that you can print out and then score yourself each month on each of the areas.  Some of the categories are a little different, however they will keep you on the level.  Take time for your life and be clear about what is really important.

Please also remember that this is just a taster of what coaching might do for you.  It is not a substitute for working with a coach and if you feel that you would benefit from hiring your own coach, I would love to hear from you, provided that you are fully committed to taking regular action.  I also coach coaches in a supervisory capacity and would welcome hearing from any coaches who need supervision................or just need a coach.
