What's Your Story?

September 4, 2008 19:10 by Chris Smith

When I take on new coaching clients I ask them to write their life story in no more than 1200 words.  How often does somebody ask you to do that?  Have you ever done it? If you did do it, what would you say?  What areas would get most attention?  Would you talk about your professional life more, or your personal life?  What events have shaped your life thus far?  Who have been the important people along the way?  Who and what has influenced you most?  Who are your role models?

All of these questions help to uncover your story.  As a coach, this provides me with a very privileged insight into your life and what is important to you.  For the client, there is a golden opportunity to reflect and to notice how your journey has unfolded so far.  What patterns do you notice emerging?  Are there any recurring themes that have shown up?  What have you decided about yourself?  How do you think other people experience you?

For most, the light bulb moment comes when they realise just how much they have accomplished in their lifetime AND that a great deal of this might have happened without much planning...............and then it hits them..........imagine how much more could be achieved WITH a plan!  It is such an amazing insight.

If you feel that your story always ends the same then you might want to look at some of the beliefs that you are carrying around with you.  For example, some people's story says that they are just no good at relationships.  Some people go through more relationships than hot dinners just to prove the point!  If this is you, then you need to go back several chapters in your life until you get to the part where you made the decision that this was how it was going to be for you.  You probably made that decision for a seemingly good reason at the time, yet when you examine it now, you probably find that those reasons don't really stack up any more.

If you are telling that story as you meet new people and go through life, you are unconsciously re-enforcing some powerful and destructive messages about yourself and you might want to call a halt to that anytime now.  Start telling a different story, even if you don't believe it yet.  Most people like happy endings and if you get clear about what yours is now, you can start telling the story that fits who you really want to be.  Fake it till you make it!  When you start telling something that feels a little incongruent with your present reality, it may feel a little uncomfortable at first, and then........it begins to fit.  It feels right and you are now feeding your unconscious mind with a new set of valuable instructions that you can re-enforce over and over.  Decide on a great story and start telling it how you really want it to be.  You have everything to gain!

What if my new story about my life like I want it to be sounds so unbelievable to me in my current situation, that I can´t stick with it until I make it?

What if I have tried a new story over and over in the past and nothing has changed?

Hi Christina,

Thanks for posting a comment on my blog site. It has been a long time since we spoke. I hope that you are OK, although I sense you are frustrated with your progress. What is standing in the way of your success? Are you going after what you really want? How does it fit with your values. What are you telling yourself about not having what you want?

What beliefs do you need to put in place to change your story? Is your story that your story can’t happen or that you somehow can’t get it?

Kind Regards
Chris

Hi Chris,

Thank´s for your reply. I have tried to contact you through the contact form on your website, regarding a coaching session, but it hasn´t worked (Serverproblem).

Well, in general I have a good life, but there are plans I had to give up and I got the feeling I´m running in circles for 2 years now.

I would be happy to have a session with you, maybe an extended one and I hope to hear from you soon.

X
Christina
