The Mind and Body Connection

June 13, 2008 16:47 by Chris Smith

I am loving working out with a personal trainer twice a week and have been for the past 2 and half months.  Like most people, I had become pretty lazy at the gym, doing the same old routines and not pushing myself at all.  Going to the gym had just become another thing on the to do list because I thought I 'should' do it.  Now, not surprisingly, whenever you find a good reason to do something, it is just altogether easier to do it.  A sense of purpose, motivation and achievement.  As summer is supposedly on the way, I want to look good in a pair of swimmers on the beach or by the pool.  As I am also in my mid forties, I decided that it was time to really push myself again and build up some great muscles and tone my body.

I find weight lifting and fitness addictive in the best possible way.  And let's face it, if you are going to be addicted to anything, it may as well be something great like exercise.  The guy that I work with, Fran has a great way of instructing so that as I am doing the exercises, he makes the connection for me between what is going on in my mind and how my body should be responding.  Putting attention into the muscles in my biceps and triceps and feeling the squeeze in my shoulders as I do a seated row really help me to understand what I am doing and how it should feel.  Of course the truth is that most great coaches come from a fitness or competitive sports environment.  So many of the disciplines that apply to building fitness and playing sports read across beautifully into business life and relationships.  Using less effort on smaller muscles but using more repetitions helps to develop them quicker, whereas larger muscle groups need to be worked harder with more weights.  Many other things in your life are pro ably the same.  There will be smaller things that if done regularly will give you a great result whereas some of the larger tasks will need more effort applied over a more intense period.  One principle underlies both of these approaches - finding a great reason to do it, feel good and then keep on doing it.......go on try it, you might even enjoy it!  Have a great weekend.
