Making Your Goals Stand Out

January 7, 2009 21:29 by Chris Smith

Yesterday we looked at putting the 'what by when' into a table so that you have high level goals and deliverable dates.  Today I want to take you through translating those high level goals into language that brings your goals alive.  No accident that Health is at the top of the list.  Your health is undoubtedly your wealth and without it, none of the other things are possible.  So let's take the heath goals form the example and then work them into something that is more fun.

Goal Metric Date
Health Get fit and lose weight in time for my summer holidays.    Adopt a healthier eating regime.Reduce my alcohol intakeStop smoking Loose 10 kilosJoin gym and make 3 visits per weekHire a personal trainerSeek nutrition adviceFree from tobacco and nicotine products 01 July 0906 Jan 09 12 Jan 0907 Jan 0928 Feb 09

The extract above is purely looking at health.  Whatever you have included for the remaining 8 sections will need your magic applied to them.  Using the SMART principle and remembering that you should put them in the first person i.e. "I" as well as putting them into the present (as though you already have the goal you desire) and using language that is audacious!  I have a favourite quote by motivational speaker Les Brown that goes like this "shoot for the moon, if you miss at least you will land among the stars!"  Assume that whatever you state as a goal will be achieved, so go ahead and make them worthwhile.....you are going to get them.

Here are example statements that shift your high level goals into a new gear:-

"I feel elated now that I am 10 kilos lighter!  I am loving the continuous compliments and encouragement from my friends and family and get a rush of excitement each time I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or a shop window"

"I am so happy and grateful now that I have an amazing relationship with my body and am fully committed to eating only the healthiest foods.  I find it incredibly easy now to make smart choices"

"I am happy and grateful that I am exercising 3 times each week and love discovering how much I love my body.  The gym is a great place to increase my energy levels and meet new people"

"I am truly amazed and delighted at how much better I feel now that I only have an occasional glass of wine at the weekends.  I never knew that the clarity of mind and thinking would be some amazing!"

"I am so happy and grateful now that I am smoke free.  My lungs expand and contract freely and each day I feel better and better.  What a gift!"

So what do you do with these statements now?  Well you need to put them somewhere really visible where you can look at them each day.  You can transfer them onto small A6 cards and carry them round with you.  Put them on your wardrobe doors, mirrors and/or refrigerator door (especially the ones that relate to weight loss!).

Tomorrow we will take a look at adding some pictorial representations that will add yet another dimension to your hearts desires.  Take some time now to work through your own statements and remember to make them audacious!  Remember when you were a child and you used to exaggerate things to your friends?  Perhaps well meaning adults told you not to do that, well, now it is time to go back and exaggerate.  Goal setting should be fun.  You can do and have whatever you want.  What are waiting for.....................?
