Making Way for Your Success

August 12, 2008 21:20 by Chris Smith

As many of you know, I am not a big fan of psychotherapy, probably because I went to the Richard Bandler school of NLP.  A couple of years ago, I did some work with a great psychotherapist who helped me to see what was getting in the way of my own success.  Now when I talk about success, I don't just mean professional success, I am approaching this more holistically.  It is a good fit with the approach I take to coaching.  You need to look at all areas of your life, not just 1 or 2 of them.  I had a light bulb moment of clarity during sessions when I realised how much stuff I was doing just to please other people, or to be seen to be 'a good guy' or doing the right thing.  The breakthrough for me was that the right thing in other people's eyes, was not necessarily moving me in the direction that I really wanted to go.

I wonder what you might need to do to make way for your own success.  Are there relationships that you are investing a lot of time and effort in just to be 'seen' to be doing the right thing?  Are you volunteering to do things that you don't really want to do, eating up your valuable time?  How much do you think you have to give out before you get around to taking care of your own needs and objectives?

The answers to this will largely depend on the filters that you apply to your world and how you experience it.  Jung Typology or the Myers Briggs Type Indicator tests will help you to gain more clarity on that front.  For those who make decisions predominantly based on hard facts and figures, you are more likely to have got out of your own way some time ago.  For the those who feel their way through life, remember that it is not your responsibility to take on everybody's problems and issues and solve them.  Sometimes making way for your own success means that you need to get out of your own way and appreciate that some things are just meant to be taken care of by somebody else.
